Info about CAA’s March meeting from Jessica Purdy:

Hello everyone,

It’s almost that time again for our monthly branch meeting.  We are looking forward to having our first crime writer up to talk to the Leacock/Simcoe group.  Crime novelist and screenwriter, John McFetridge, will talk about the crime writing genre in Canada as well as what it takes to write mystery and crime into your novel.

Our Writers Helping Writers segment this month will focus on writing your second draft and having the perseverance to keep going.

Please note that this month the meeting will take place on the last Wednesday of the month, the 25th, rather than the Thursday.  It is a temporary change and meeting dates will go back to the last Thursday of the month in April.

BOO! CAA Open Mic Fright Night!

Hello all you ghouls and ghosts! CAA will be having an Open Mic Fright Night on Thursday October 24th, 2013 from 6:30 – 8:30 PM.

Ravenous Rose-Ann has made a spooky poster to view, download and/or share, it’s frightfully delicious! (Check out her amazing graphic of Skeletor at the Microphone! MUH-WAH-HA-HA!) Come dressed as your favourite author (or come as you are) if you dare read your spooktacular and horrifying original pieces of poetry or stories.

I will include a few writing prompts in my next post to help you release your inner beast and write something quite terrifying to share at this event. Anyone who needs a ride to this event, feel free to contact one of the head witches in our [writing] coven, Rose-Ann

Karen Mulhallen Speaks to the Canadian Author’s Association on June 27, 2013

On Thursday June 27, 2013, the Canadian Author’s Association welcomes speaker Karen Mulhallen. Info about the speaker:

Dr. Karen Mulhallen teaches courses in Modernism, myth and archetype in literature, creative writing, eighteenth century literature and society, and tragic and comic modes, in the English department at Ryerson University. She is an internationally acclaimed editor, and has published essays on the arts both in Canada and in the UK. For more than three decades she has edited the award-winning literary magazine Descant, and through the magazine and other anthologies has promoted the work of Canadian writers nationally and internationally. She has published ten books of poetry, as well as edited more than one hundred and thirty issues of Descant magazine. She is currently working on a book exploring the conjunction of art and science in eighteenth century book illustration. Dr. Mulhallen has generously donated the Karen Mulhallen Modernism Collection to the MLCRC.

Our speaker this month will be Karen Mulhallen, the founder and editor of Descant literary magazine.  Karen is also the author of several books.  She will be talking about what it takes to get into literary magazines as well as her lengthy and esteemed career in editing and writing.  The poster for the event is attached in pdf form.

As usual the meeting will take place on the last Thursday of the month, June 27th, at 121 Mississaga St., Down by The Bay event room.  Doors open at 5:30 and the evening events will be begin at 6:30pm.  Please let me know if you have any questions or would like to register for the event.

On May 30 at 6:30 pm Canadian Authors Association- Leacock Simcoe presents writing teacher, editor and award winning author, Elizabeth Ruth, talking about self-promotion and the novel writing process as well as the publication of her latest book, Matadora.  As usual, this will be at Down by the Bay in downtown Orillia and doors will be open at 5:30 pm to facilitate dinner ordering and prep.

Elizabeth Ruth is a writer, editor, creative writing instructor and mother living in Toronto, Canada. Her first novel, Ten Good Seconds of Silence was a finalist for the Writers’ Trust of Canada Fiction Prize, the Amazon.ca Best First Novel Award and the City of Toronto Book Award. Her critically acclaimed second novel, Smoke, was chosen for the 2007 One Book One Community program. Elizabeth Ruth’s third novel – Matadora, about a female bullfighter in 1930’s Spain – was published in Canada in spring 2013 by Cormorant Books. 

Elizabeth is well known for her mentorship of aspiring writers. She teaches at the University of Toronto, and through the Humber School for Writers. In 2011 Elizabeth held the position of Writer-In-Residence at the Toronto Public Library. Elizabeth has also held the position of Writer-In-Residence at the Oshawa and Kitchener Public Libraries. In recent years, Elizabeth has mentored middle and high school English students through WIER, Writers in Electronic Residence. In 2011 she delivered workshops and offered manuscript evaluations to writers across northern Ontario. In 2012, together with Ann Douglas, Elizabeth Ruth was hired by The Writer’s Union of Canada (TWUC) to deliver professional development workshops to writers across the country. She is a long-standing member of TWUC and the current chair of the author’s advisory committee of the Writers’ Trust of Canada. 

Elizabeth Ruth has a BA in English Literature and an MA in Counselling Psychology, both from the University of Toronto. She is also a graduate of the Humber School of Writers.
